Chapter Seventeen
Ethan was tired by the time the phone rang, but at hearing the witch had agreed to see them, a rush of adrenaline set his heart to pumping. He was having a hard time reading Cady. She was unusually quiet, and it unsettled him, having grown used to her chatter. While she seemed thrilled to hear the news, he could sense some unease in meeting with Luz, but that wasn’t too surprising. They had a lot riding on this visit.
He’d been expecting her to give him the address for a neutral place, a coffee shop or someplace semi-public, but the GPS in their stolen car led them to a modest Spanish style home with a red shingle roof. The yard was a tad overgrown and it wouldn’t have won any curb appeal awards with the broken concrete path, but it didn’t look seedy or disreputable.
The door opened before he could knock, a woman dressed in a conservative black pencil skirt and a high collared blouse smiling at them in greeting. “I am Luz Santiago. You are looking for a witch?” Her accent was thick, but understandable. He guessed Hispanic of some type based on her name and dark features, but she could have been Italian. Overall she was a beautiful woman, with that look about her that if she took off the unadventurous skirt and let her hair down she’d be a handful.
“Yep, that’s the general idea,” Cady replied, reservations written all over her face as she peered past the witch into her home with trepidation.
“So, this is the one,” Luz clucked, reaching for Cady’s hand without fear. Her eyes went distant for a moment as she stroked the back of Cady’s hand. “Pobrecita,” she said finally. “I can tell this is very upsetting to you. To both of you,” she acknowledged Ethan for the first time. “Ven, come in, please.”
“Thank you for seeing us,” Cady said, stepping over the threshold and into the small living room, taking a seat when Luz motioned them to. Ethan wasn’t sure if he should sit or stand, and perched on the arm of the couch, still on edge.
“Can I see the mark?”
“Um, sure.” Cady lifted the hair from the back of her neck and turned, giving them a view of the glyph there. Luz nodded, her hand hovering over the tattoo but not touching the skin, muttering to herself in Spanish. “Do you think you can help me get it out?”
“First we have to see what we’re dealing with,” Luz replied, pouring out a cup of fragrant tea. “Drink this, it will calm you.”
“Oh, no thanks,” Cady demurred. “I’m not sure I could keep anything down right now.”
“Try it, it has ginger in it and other spices, it’ll settle your stomach good. And I need it to See how strong her hold is on you.”
Ethan traded looks with Cady, wishing he could give her the reassurance she looked to him for, but witchcraft didn’t sit well with him. Not that he thought this Luz was a bad person, but anyone who dabbled in magic made him nervous.
